Montessori education for autism

IEP for each student

IEP for each student

Montessori methodology is unique and radically different from that in traditional schools in providing a highly individualized curriculum for every child.  If well executed, each child’s needs can be fully accommodated even though there may be a wide range of capabilities and learning styles in the classroom.  Applying today’s terminology, one can say that any child, typical or with special needs, is on an IEP in a Montessori classroom by default.

There is little group instruction in a Montessori classroom, and thus students are not compelled to cover the same material at the same pace as their classmates. There is no need for disruptive pull-outs for students who require additional help since they can work on their individualized goals right there in the classroom.  Each child’s capabilities and individual learning style are respected and nurtured, instead of being constantly compared to a class standard.  A Montessori environment is ideal both for gifted children and for children with special needs.  The latter are not “kept behind” but rather given a “gift of time” if they need to spend an extra year in the same classroom.
