Individualized or Small Group Instruction

Since language is a fundamental deficit for many ASD students, formal instruction in a large-group setting can be particularly difficult for them to understand.  Unfortunately, most traditional schools teach to the group (rather than to an individual) based on a standardized curriculum, while using predominantly language-based instruction rather than relying on experimental and hands-on learning.  No wonder, children who are not exactly typical do not do well in this kind of environment.   To the contrary, in a Montessori environment,  teaching occurs predominantly one-on-one or in small groups, with use of didactic and multi-sensory materials to back up verbal explanations.  Unlike traditional schools,  Montessori schools seldom use large-group lecture-based presentations.
